Will the PageRank of the Website Drop?

google pagerank toolbarAfter writing my previous post about validating pagerank I thought to myself that I also need to explain the following problem where sites with a real pagerank is for sale, but with one big problem being that the pagerank is likely to drop after the next update.

What you need to be aware of, is that there is another kind of scam where sellers try to sell high pagerank sites, but the high pagerank has been obtained through few links on very high pagerank sites of their own, or that they just have access to, and those links are likely to be removed after a sale. Here is an example:

  • Some guy has a website (A) with a good pagerank let’s say 8.
  • He wants to make some easy money by selling another website (B).
  • So he links to website B from website A.
  • After the next toolbar pagerank update website B will most likely have obtained a REAL pagerank of 7.
  • Then he puts it up for sale on some forums where someone ends up buying it.
  • After the deals is through he removes the link from website A
  • The next time Google measures link popularity (NOT the toolbar pagerank) website B has a pagerank next to zero.
  • So the website that was bought is worth almost nothing - based on pagerank.

I’ll just repeat yesterdays tip: “The next time you’re valuating a website based on its pagerank. Check if the pagerank is real and that it is not likely to drop after the next update.”

How To Validate the PageRank of a Website

google pagerank toolbarI once in a while see somebody trying to sell a website which they claim has a pagerank of X. And there is a lot of buyers that base some of their valuation on how high the pagerank is. Who wouldn’t buy a cheap pagerank 7 site?

The problem is that the seller isn’t always right - and most of the times they know it. They use a technique to have the Google toolbar show another websites pagerank for the website they are trying to sell. So how can you determine whether or not the pagerank is real?

The technique is to have Google believe that the domain is another website. This can be done with redirects on the domain pointing to a high pagerank website. I won’t go into details since others have already done so.

You can check if a website is showing another websites pagerank by going to Google and enter the domain name in the search form. Note that you should check the exact domain - including the subdomain - of the site where you see the pagerank. That means that you have to enter www.example.com if that is the URL shown in the address bar.

When you do that Google will return a result showing the title, “description” and URL for the site that the search engine sees as the website for the URL. This URL needs to be exactly like the URL you entered in the search form e.g. www.example.com. If it shows another URL it means that the pagerank you see in the toolbar is most likely belonging to the that site, and not the one for sale.

The next time you’re valuating a website based on its pagerank. Check if the pagerank is real and that it is not likely to drop after the next update.

Webmaster & Domain forum for Sale: ~3,800 posts

Realdn.com screenshotI just spotted a webmaster & domain name forum for sale at NamePros. The forum itself seems pretty dead, but according to the statistics provided by the seller, there is a decent amount of traffic.

The forum is RealDN and it has a pagerank 4. In this month there has been around 13,000 uniques who did ~54,000 pageviews.

The seller wants the bidding to start of at $500, but he has a reserve, and mentions that the right offer will buy immediately. The auction will be for 7 days and seller will post a BIN in a couple of days.

This forum could be a good start to create a community, but remember that there is plenty of webmaster and domain forums already.

There are two things to notice. 1. Theres was a huge drop in traffic in November and December according to the stats. 2. There is a lot of links in the bottom, so the link popularity might be obtained through such link exchanges.

Podcasting blog for sale: PodFly.com ~$100 monthly revenue

Podfly.com screenshotPodFly.com is up for sale at SitePoint. The website is a blog about podcasting.

This is a part of the sellers description of the site: “The site empowers its visitors by providing step-by-step podcasting tutorials, insightful articles and interviews, as well as the first global directory of podcasters“.

According to seller there has been in average a $100 monthly revenue. And there is ~30,000 pageviews/month. The website has a pagerank of 5, and has some good backlinks, but technorati only reports 8 sites linking. This is not a problem, but instead shows that they probably haven’t taken full use of the blogosphere.

A buyer should fix the template to show unique titles for each post. The URL / permalinks should also be fixed. I guess that would increase traffic from the search engines. And my last comment for a buyer would be that he should notify other podcasting-bloggers about new articles that he puts up - get some links from the blogosphere.

Active Scottish Gaelic forum for sale, ~100,000 pageviews/month

savegaelic.org screenshotSaveGaelic.org is for sale at Sedo.

SaveGaelic.org is dedicated to the Scottish Gaelic language. It features one of if not the most popular forums related to Scottish Gaelic on the internet today.

The forum seems to be pretty active with almost all of the forums having activity within the last week. Most of the forums has got activity within the last couple of hours, so it does seem like a good community.

According to the Sedo tracker there is around 330 unique visitors a day, and they look at ~9 pages in average. So that is almost 100,000 pageviews in a month.

Forum for Sale: my.IS, ~100,000 pageviews/day, ~$1,700 rev./month

My.IS screenshotHere is an interesting forum which definitely seems great. My.IS (and is300.net) is for sale at SitePoint.

According to Bigboards there should be around 100,000 pageviews a day. But the seller reports that according to Google (Google Analytics, I guess) it is on average 33,000 pageviews a day.

I believe that there is some hidden values in this forum. First of all, I can see that the amount of pages, that Google and Yahoo has indexed, is very much below the actual amount of pages. So I am sure that there is alot of traffic to gain from search engines. These users coming through searches is normally clicking ads more often, so they might be of really good value.

Secondly, I think that since the subject is very specific - Lexus IS-models - it should be possible to obtain higher earnings than what the seller reports.
The starting bid is $25,000, which I believe is a good price. For somebody, with the knowledge needed to improve this forum, there are some decent money to make.

If anybody ends up buying this website, then do link building. The current pagerank is 3, which is very low. Link popularity in this end, can easily be improved, and thereby increase the amount of pages indexed by search engines.
