Did you forget to pre-register EU domains?

EURid eu domains - logoThis upcoming friday the EU domain rush will get rolling… EURid opens at 11:00 on Friday the 9th, and they expect it will take some hours to process all the pre-registrations that registrars has been accepting during the last months.

So did you forget to pre-register your desired EU domains? If you did, then you still have a chance, but if it is “popular” domains you want to register, then the race is probably already over for you. With all the pre-registrations that will be processed some of them is probably for the same domain name you’re thinking about right now - which ever it is ;-)

At http://status.eurid.eu/ you are able to follow the stats for the .eu domain registrations, so if you’re into that, go check it out friday when the rush begins. It should update every 15 minutes, so it is going to be exiting to see how many domains will be registered. And even more exciting to see if one gets those applied for…

Summary of Interesting Websites for Sale Today

There are several interesting websites for sale today, so I’ll just make a short summary of each of them.

The first is for sale at SitePoint:
A t-shirt website called crewddewdsshirts.com. It has a monthly revenue of $500+ made by selling shirts, but also has income from shareasale.com and other sites they are affliated with, along with adsense, bidvertiser, adbrite, etc. The website itself is really clutered with all sorts of stuff like links, banners etc. but it still interesting since it makes money and it gives space for improvement.

The second is for sale at SitePoint:
The website feedbomb.com is a blog / feed directory with 25,000 monthly pageviews from ~3,300 unique visitors. The site makes about $33 dollars a month, but I think this could be improved be placing ads on all pages, and by changing the ad formats. One thing to be aware of is that many bloggers don’t like to have their full feeds published on other sites, so I think it would be a good idea to make the site only show 250-350 charaters of each feed item.

The third is for sale at DigitalPoint:
There isn’t much information in the sales thread - not even the URL - but it is a weight loss related blog that makes decent money ~$3000 a month.

The fourth is for sale at sedo:
The website LoveOGram.com is a simple viral website where people can let other people know that they have a crush on them - anonymously. The website has about 3000 - 4000 daily uniques, and I think it could be monetized much better - even though I don’t know how much the owner is making from it.

How To Validate the PageRank of a Website

google pagerank toolbarI once in a while see somebody trying to sell a website which they claim has a pagerank of X. And there is a lot of buyers that base some of their valuation on how high the pagerank is. Who wouldn’t buy a cheap pagerank 7 site?

The problem is that the seller isn’t always right - and most of the times they know it. They use a technique to have the Google toolbar show another websites pagerank for the website they are trying to sell. So how can you determine whether or not the pagerank is real?

The technique is to have Google believe that the domain is another website. This can be done with redirects on the domain pointing to a high pagerank website. I won’t go into details since others have already done so.

You can check if a website is showing another websites pagerank by going to Google and enter the domain name in the search form. Note that you should check the exact domain - including the subdomain - of the site where you see the pagerank. That means that you have to enter www.example.com if that is the URL shown in the address bar.

When you do that Google will return a result showing the title, “description” and URL for the site that the search engine sees as the website for the URL. This URL needs to be exactly like the URL you entered in the search form e.g. www.example.com. If it shows another URL it means that the pagerank you see in the toolbar is most likely belonging to the that site, and not the one for sale.

The next time you’re valuating a website based on its pagerank. Check if the pagerank is real and that it is not likely to drop after the next update.

Domain Prices of 2005

DNJournal provides us with a comprehensive list of domains that sold in 2005. The list includes price, date and where the domains sold. Domains that are listed has sold for prices of $10,000+

It is pretty interesting to look at the domain list to get a better idea of potential domain value, which should also be taken into consideration when buying (and selling) websites.

Boy Band Community for Sale, ~250,000 posts

breeding5.com screenshotThere is a boy band (breeding 5..?) community for sale at Dnforum. The forum is located at www.breeding5.com and seems pretty active. It has about 15,000 monthly uniques and 150,000 monthly pageviews according to seller. There is currently 260,626 posts and 5,245 members.

Almost every forum category has had activity today, and there a lots of threads in which this activity occurs.

It is on auction with a starting bid at $995, but the seller looks for $2,000+. With a $75 monthly adsense revenue this seems a bit high, but I would judge that the adsense is badly implemented, and that there definitely is opportunities for big improvements. Like implemeting more adsense elements - one in between of posts.

Also the indexing in Google and Yahoo is not much, so with a little bit of SEO and link building I guess that you could increase the traffic. That is, if there are searches in this “niche”.

Only thing I would worry about, is potential issues regarding the domain name. I don’t know if this is a real problem, but I recall there beeing some previous cases about using artist names in domains. Heck, I don’t even know what the exact name of the boy band is…

Blog for Sale: GeekCoffee, $8000 revenue last year

GeekCoffee.net screenshotThe technology blog GeekCoffee (geekcoffee.net & geekcoffee.com) is for sale a NamePros. There isn’t much information in the sales thread, but according to seller the blog should be pulling in around $8000 a year through advertising.

The seller is asking for $8,500, which was lowered from $10,000, so I guess that the interest hasn’t been overwhelming.

Be aware that it seems like there is currently both Google’s Adsense and Yahoo!’s YPN on the blog. This is as far as I know not allowed. So you might not be able to pull the same revenue from it.

Gadget Blog for Sale: Gadgetizer.com ~500 daily uniques

Gadgetizer.com screenshotThere is a Gadget Blog for sale at Sedo. The blog is Gadgetizer.com which is a frequently updated gadgets weblog featuring news and commentary on consumer electronics and tech issues.

From the Sedotracker I’d say that the blog get about 500 daily uniques. And taken into consideration that there hasn’t really been posted on the blog for the last ten days, those numbers should increase if there is subscribers to the RSS feeds.

The blog has a pagerank 6 and around 1000 pages indexed by Google. It looks like there was a lot of posting until mid-november 2005 and then almost nothing until january 2006. So it is hard to say if there is potential for a loyal readership. And thereby it is hard to value.

Webmaster & Domain forum for Sale: ~3,800 posts

Realdn.com screenshotI just spotted a webmaster & domain name forum for sale at NamePros. The forum itself seems pretty dead, but according to the statistics provided by the seller, there is a decent amount of traffic.

The forum is RealDN and it has a pagerank 4. In this month there has been around 13,000 uniques who did ~54,000 pageviews.

The seller wants the bidding to start of at $500, but he has a reserve, and mentions that the right offer will buy immediately. The auction will be for 7 days and seller will post a BIN in a couple of days.

This forum could be a good start to create a community, but remember that there is plenty of webmaster and domain forums already.

There are two things to notice. 1. Theres was a huge drop in traffic in November and December according to the stats. 2. There is a lot of links in the bottom, so the link popularity might be obtained through such link exchanges.

Sex.com domain sold for $14,000,000

I just read at a post on SiliconBeat that XBiz reports that the domain sex.com has been sold for nothing less than $14 million dollars. Gary Kremen who recently won the fight over the domain, has been unavailable for comments according to XBiz. They also state that the company InternetRealEstate.com takes part in the sale.

It is interesting to see how much a domain name can be worth. I recall business.com beeing solg for $7.5 million and I just checked some other high domain sales.

Beer.com - $7 million (2004)
Diamond.com - $6 million (2000)
Loans.com - $3 million (2000)
